At St. Philip’s RC Primary School, Collective Worship is central to school life and underpins everything we do. We come together regularly as a school community to pray, reflect, celebrate, and grow in faith. Collective Worship takes many forms, including class-based prayer and liturgy, assemblies, whole-school worship, and Mass. These experiences provide our pupils with rich opportunities to deepen their personal relationship with God, understand the teachings of Christ, and live out the Gospel values in their daily lives.
We are proud of the way our children actively engage in and participate in Collective Worship. From the Early Years through to Year 6, our pupils are encouraged to plan and lead prayer and liturgy, supported by a carefully planned progression that builds confidence, understanding, and spiritual maturity. Children take on a range of liturgical roles, such as choosing scripture, hymns and music, creating prayerful focal points, and inviting reflection. Our Mission Team plays a key role in leading daily prayer, guiding younger pupils, and supporting liturgical celebrations such as school Masses.
Throughout the school, prayer and worship are shaped by the Church’s liturgical year. Children learn about and reflect on the different seasons and feasts of the Church calendar, understanding how these connect to the life of Jesus. They also experience a variety of ways to pray, including traditional prayers, spontaneous prayer, music, silence, scripture, and symbolic actions. Personal prayer is supported through the use of prayer journals and thoughtfully placed prayer stations around the school. These spaces offer pupils quiet moments for reflection and spiritual connection during the school day.
Importantly, our pupils reflect deeply on their experiences of prayer and liturgy. They are not only inspired to grow in their faith but also moved to take positive action in response. Whether it’s organising charity fundraisers, taking part in community events, or making small daily choices that reflect Gospel values, our children show that faith leads to action. Prayer and liturgy at St. Philip’s helps our pupils to become thoughtful, compassionate individuals who seek to make a difference in the world around them.
